About the Course

Self-advocacy is not a personality trait, it is a teachable set of skills. You will learn how to scaffold these skills for different ages and abilities using brief, repeatable strategies. We show you how to help a child notice a need, pick words or visuals that fit, make a clear request, and follow up without conflict. By the end, you will be able to teach the four core components of self-advocacy, knowledge of self, knowledge of rights, communication, and leadership. You will know how to use age-tuned scripts and visuals, create low-stakes practice reps at home or school, involve students in plans and meetings, and adapt for AAC and other communication styles. The result is a shared coaching method for adults and more comfort, clarity, and confidence for the children and teens you support.
